Why this petition matters

Started by Colin Baptie

More than 220 acres of Redwoods and Douglas Firs on the banks of the Russian River near Guerneville, California are being threatened by a major logging plan. Ninety-six percent of the logging area is within the California Highway 116 Scenic Corridor.

If approved, the Silver Estates’ Timber Harvest Plan (THP) will not only destroy a fragile ecosystem, home to a number of sensitive and at risk species, but also threaten the 2,000 year Clar Tree. This 340ft Redwood ‘monarch’ is the tallest tree in Sonoma County and is believed to be the tallest privately-owned tree in the world.

Experts, including geologists, fire experts, and biologists, have all identified concerns with the plan. More than 300 public comments oppose it.

The Guerneville Forest Coalition (GFC) is a group of local residents and businesses that is calling on the California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Prevention (Cal Fire) to reject this THP. While serious flaws in the plan have already led to five delays in granting approval. Cal Fire rarely denies such plans.

Please sign our petition.

  1. We urge Cal Fire to block the Silver Estates THP
  2. We call for the timberland owner (Roger Burch and Redwood Empire) to work with the local community to develop a plan that puts the safety of residents and the environment above company profits
  3. We urge Governor Gavin Newsom and Cal Fire Director Thom Porter to help fight climate change with sustainable forest management policies

Please donate today to help us save the forest and protect the community of Guerneville from increased fire and landslide risks, or contact us through our site if you would like to get involved.
