Dissolve Collective

Dissolve is a writing collective where art-making and looking are personal, performative, entangled, and unexpected. With this membership-based platform, we seek to engage a community of art thinkers, cultural producers, writers, and artists with our eye on content that blurs disciplinary modes of production, agendas, and philosophies. Through Patreon, we will also share selections in the form of art-making prompts, recommended readings, art chats, and thoughtful responses to our “Dear Dissolve” advice column. We hope to see you on Patreon.From 2016–18, Dissolve produced a self-published digital arts publication, working with a collective of writers, curators, artists, and art thinkers. Although initially based in the San Francisco Bay Area, over time Dissolve began to engage both local and internationally-based contributors, producing work that is not only sourced from various geopolitical locales but often multilingual. Today, Dissolve is a project by <a href="https://visarts.ucsd.edu/people/grad-students/kathryn-barulich.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kathryn Barulich</a>, <a href="http://squier.co/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Christopher Squier</a>, and <a href="https://jackievalle.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Jackie Valle</a>.

Our Monthly Art-Making Prompts come in the form of writing or images designed to reignite your visual and/or writing-based practice by serving as unconventional and open-ended points of departure for creating work.

Our Monthly Recommended Readings provide a downloadable list of texts, essays, books, and images that Dissolve editors have come across in their own work, as well as all benefits of the Art-Maker membership tier.

Readers

“Dearly Dissolved” is a monthly advice column where we invite contemporary artists, writers, and culture producers to send questions, conundrums, and provocations to us in the form of an open letter to be featured on the platform together with a thoughtful response. Dearly Dissolved members also receive benefits of the Art-Maker and Reader tiers.

Dearly Dissolved

Art Chats, much like a studio visit or tutorial, offer the opportunity to float a new idea, read a few sentences from your artist statement, or receive feedback on a recent work in a small group setting. Art Chats are facilitated by Dissolve editors Christopher Squier and Jackie Valle. They are held as one-hour sessions on the second Monday of the month at 12pm PST/3pm EST* with 3-5 participants. Beloved members also receive benefits of the Art-maker, Reader, and Dearly Dissolved membership tiers.*If you would like to participate with Art Chats but are unable to attend on the second Mondays of each month, please kindly reach out to us at info@dissolvesf.org to discuss an alternative arrangement.
